Blog Post 4: Letter to Ohio State Representative

Dear Representative Marlene Anielski,
We are currently learning about institutional racism in our Education Class and also have been seeing examples of this in our own backyard of Ohio. In fact, we learned that the Ohio Supreme Court has ruled that our system of school finance to be unconstitutional since 1997, and still has not been changed. We have seen documentaries on how awful some of our Ohio public schools are and how nice others are. I would just like to ask why this issue has not been fixed 19 years later? Are there any measures at all being taken to make our system constitutional? We are also learning about institutional discrimination and how it has such a large effect on individuals, especially in schools. Sonia Nieto claims in Chapter 5 of Educational FoundationsAlthough the beliefs and behaviors of individuals may be hurtful, far greater damage is done through institutional discrimination, that is, the systematic use of economic and political power in institutions (such as schools) that leads to detrimental policies and practices,” (43). If our country stands for equality and the equal rights of ALL citizens, then why do some citizens of our state have inadequate public schools and funding while others have extravagant and more than enough funding? Don’t all Ohio public schools deserve the same quality of schooling?

Sincerely,
Carmen Cameratta
