Yes, some foundational concepts taught to
students are things that need to be memorized
o
However, issues arise when memorization is where learning stops for students
o
Teachers need to help students to learn these
foundational concepts, and then further their growth and learning by applying
them to the outside world, drawing conclusions, and allowing them to discover
new solutions and problems by themselves
o
Additionally, teachers need to realize that learning
goes both ways

Students learns from teachers, but teachers also
learn from students, which is why education is a field where the teacher and
the student are on a journey together to discover new things

Not all classes and students are the same
o
This idea comes from Susan Ohanian’s chapter “On
Stir-and-Serve Recipes for Teaching” in Educational
Foundations

There is no one perfect lesson plan that can be
a perfect fit for every single classroom or every single student
o
Students come from different backgrounds, learn
at different paces, have different interests, and have different abilities

Lesson plans need to be structured around the
teacher’s understanding of her class and her students because the structure and
content of a lesson determines what each student gets out of it
o
Consequently, if the lesson plan does not fit
the class or students at all, learning will extremely difficult and the
students may be missing out

Great teachers are like great actors

audience (classroom of students), interact, and draw energy and inspiration from
the relationship

part is never done, but must be learned anew-great acting (teaching) is in
search of better acting (teaching)

Great actors (teachers) find a seed of
authenticity to move from caricature to complex, living human beings
